21 Day Self Care Reboot

Teachers: You Are Not Your Job.
You have a life outside of your job, but does that life know you exist?

Picture this scene:

Amanda Taylor [ Mrs. Taylor to her students] got into teaching because she wanted to make a positive impact in the lives of children. She knew it was not going to be an easy profession but she was up for the challenge.

She wanted to be that teacher that changed lives. Through her teaching, she brought creativity and excitement to the room, created  curriculum that reached all types of learners. Through this she was able to make deep connections with every student.

But unfortunately for Amanda, after 5 years of teaching, she now feels worn out by the tough days, and disconnected from her family and friends.

When Amanda wakes up in the morning, her body isn’t even feeling the effects of her morning coffee before she is out the door and on her way to school.

She arrives an hour before her students so she can make adjustments to her lesson plans, get her materials ready for each lesson of the day and create yet another strategy for the multiple students who are struggling mentally and emotionally.

These are the kids who keep her up at night. These are the kids who need so much more than just the academics she has planned.

She finishes all of this just minutes before her first students walk in … without a moment to even breathe.

Then her day begins:

Billy runs in and crawls under the table because he hates writing.
Jenny slumps in her chair and puts her head down because she is worried about her sister who was bullied on the bus .
Katherine who comes in and gets out her unfinished work and brings it right up to Amanda and cries asking for help..

So Amanda becomes a social worker, a therapist and a one on one tutor right out of the gate.

Amanda must wear so many hats and she is always ON.

She worries that her students aren't getting all the skills they need in order to succeed on the high stakes test.  She’s exhausted by constantly having to redirect students who are struggling. She’s starting to resent the monthly lesson observation made by her principal which never seem to go according to her well laid out plans. Most of all, Amanda feels  that she is failing as a teacher. She wants to make a difference but she feels like she is just running furiously around a hamster wheel. She feels defeated.

She is exhausted when she gets home and doesn’t have time to sit down before she has to pick up her own kids, walk the dog and start dinner.

When her partner gets home, it’s on with the rush of dinner, a few minutes to check in and then on with grading papers and planning the next day.

Rather than sleeping, Amanda lays awake thinking about her students who are in crisis or acting out. Worrying. Planning. Panicked.

Then, her alarm goes off and she starts all over again …

Amanda has no time for herself. ‘Vacations’ involve projects, curriculum planning and taking classes. …

She is on the brink of burn out.

How much of your life is reflected in Amanda’s?

Fast forward five years and Amanda is still riding the hamster wheel, feeling overwhelmed, ineffectual and questioning why she is still doing this.
Her job is consuming her; eating her alive.

The irony of this entire situation is; if Amanda had done ONE thing every day of her life, this stress would be tempered.

If she had done this ONE thing, she wouldn’t have to spend all her efforts on work and worrying about how disconnected she felt from her family and friends.

This ONE little daily action could help her get more perspective, learn to do something new and be able to handle her anxiety so she would feel more balanced and nurtured.

This one little thing could have saved Amanda from years of emotional and mental strain.

This ONE thing is:  SELF CARE

It’s your secret to a life with meaning
